Introduction

Matsushita Electric Industrial, the world's number one consumer electronics maker owned well known brands like Panasonic, Quasar, Technics, and JVC. The company produced TVs, VCRs, CD and DVD players, PCs, cellular phones, and other communications equipment.

Matsushita also sold components (batteries, semiconductors, electric motors), home appliances (washing machines, vacuum cleaners), and industrial equipment (welding and vending machines, medical equipment). The Matsushita group included more than 380 consolidated companies around the globe. In 2004, Matsushita recorded sales of $71,920.6 million and a net income of $405.2 million.

As 2005 got under way, in the wake of growing competition and increasing commoditisation, Matsushita's top management was reviewing various options to maintain the tempo of restructuring and strengthen the company's competitive position.
